Consider the following scenario: Remember Alan Sensen, from your Introduction to this unit? He is the man who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted while walking home from the metro after working late one night. As a result, Alan is suffering from severe PTSD. He is not sleeping, he is withdrawn and depressed, and he rarely ventures outside of his house. Even in his own house he keeps all of his lights on at night and repeatedly checks the door and window locks to assure himself that they are secure. Alan has been fired from his job and has not paid his rent for six months. His wife initiated divorce proceedings a few months ago, and has a court order giving her exclusive use of the family home; however, Alan refuses to leave the house. His wife asks local law enforcement to enforce the court order and remove Alan from the home. When law enforcement arrives, they knock on the door and identify themselves. Alan yells through the door that they should Go away!. One officer grabs a bullhorn and starts demanding through the bullhorn that Alan leave the house immediately. Alans wife calls his cell and he answers but says, Wait, Im getting my rifle loaded. Fearing that Alan intends to kill himself, officers storm the door and wrestle him to the ground. All the while, Alan is fighting and punching and screaming, Ill shoot you, Ill kill you all! at the top of his lungs. He manages to grab the leg of a chair, and then pulled it over and threw it on top of the officer, who is holding him down, and attempting to cuff him. The officer is hit in the head and the edge of the chair cuts his eye. Alan is tased and, once subdued, handcuffed and hauled away in the back of the patrol car. He is charged with assaulting a police officer and making terroristic threats. At trial he is found guilty, and sentenced to 3 years in prison.
