Smoke Signals Young Indian man Thomas is a nerd in his reservation, wearing oversize glasses and telling everyone stories no-one wants to hear. His parents died in a fire in 1976, and Thomas was saved by Arnold. Arnold soon left his family (and his tough son Victor), and Victor hasn’t seen his father for 10 years. When Victor hears Arnold has died, Thomas offers him funding for the trip to get Arnold’s remains, but only if Thomas will also go with him. Thomas and Victor hit the road.Available by rental: Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, and VUDUDiscuss the ways this film portrays Native American life differently than most other feature length films. How does the reservation life shown meet your expectations or perhaps surprise you. What are the various themes you see here that tie together the history of a Native People while at the same time showing that they are not isolated or stuck in time? Things you can pick out could be 1) reservation life, 2) vision quests, 3) shamanismand oral story telling, 4) poverty, 5) hope, 6) culture conflict, and/or 7) what is the realization that both of the protagonists (the two friends) come to by the end of the movie?
